For constitutional bodies like the Federal Character Commission (FCC), this responsibility goes beyond administration. It requires regular reflection, collaboration and the development of practical strategies that strengthen the Commission’s ability to deliver on its mandate of promoting equity, inclusion and national unity.
With this objective in mind, the Federal Character Commission recently concluded its five-day Executive and Management Leadership Retreat in Ikogosi-Ekiti, Ekiti State. Held under the theme, “Repositioning the Federal Character Commission for Institutional Renewal, Leadership Cohesion and National Relevance,” the retreat brought together the Commission’s leadership and management to examine the future of the institution and identify practical steps towards improving its effectiveness.
Setting the Direction for Institutional Renewal
Declaring the retreat open at the commencement of the programme, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to building a more responsive, transparent and innovative institution capable of delivering more effectively on its constitutional responsibilities.
She emphasised the importance of leadership cohesion, institutional accountability and continuous improvement in strengthening the Commission’s role within Nigeria’s public service.
The opening ceremony also witnessed the presence of the former First Lady of Osun State, Mrs. Kafayat Oyetola, who attended as the Special Guest. The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Habibat Adubiaro.
Building Capacity Through Strategic Dialogue
Over the course of the retreat, participants engaged in intensive discussions designed to strengthen leadership capacity and improve institutional performance.
Breakout sessions provided opportunities for knowledge sharing, collaborative problem-solving and practical discussions on improving the execution of the Commission’s constitutional mandate.
The sessions also examined ways to strengthen operational effectiveness, deepen accountability and develop sustainable approaches that will support the Commission’s ongoing transformation and long-term institutional growth.

A major highlight of the retreat was the presentation delivered by Rt. Hon. Olufemi Richard Bamisile, PhD, Member representing Ekiti South Federal Constituency II, who represented Rt. Hon. Idris Wase.
His presentation, titled “Repositioning the Federal Character Commission (FCC) for Greater National Relevance: Emerging Challenges and Opportunities,” encouraged participants to examine the evolving expectations placed on public institutions and identify new opportunities for the Commission to strengthen its relevance within Nigeria’s governance framework.
The presentation stimulated thoughtful discussions on leadership, institutional resilience and innovative approaches that can further improve the Commission’s effectiveness in carrying out its constitutional mandate.
Strengthening Partnerships for Better Service Delivery
The retreat also placed significant emphasis on stakeholder engagement and institutional collaboration.
Participants explored the importance of building stronger relationships with ministries, departments, agencies and other stakeholders whose cooperation is essential to the implementation of the Federal Character Principle.
Discussions focused on aligning priorities, strengthening partnerships and reinforcing the shared responsibility of institutions in promoting equity, inclusion and effective service delivery across the public sector.
Closing Ceremony and Certificate Presentation
The retreat concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony in recognition of participants’ active engagement throughout the five-day leadership programme.
The ceremony marked the successful completion of the retreat and reinforced the Commission’s commitment to continuous learning, leadership development and institutional excellence.
