Conversations that strengthen public institutions often begin around the same table. For the Federal Character Commission and the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, that conversation focused on one shared objective, ensuring that the Centre’s workforce continues to reflect the diversity and aspirations of the nation it serves.

This formed the basis of an interactive engagement between the Federal Character Commission (FCC) Committee on Federal Medical Centres and the Management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, Delta State, held at the Centre’s Boardroom.

A Dialogue Focused on Institutional Progress

The engagement was chaired by the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Abubakar Atiku Bunu, and attended by Committee members, Hon. High Chief Victor Ikeji, Hon. Jibril Maigari and Hon. Halima Ahmadu.

Speaking during the session, the Committee highlighted the Commission’s constitutional responsibility to monitor and encourage compliance with the Federal Character Principle across federal institutions. Discussions centred on the need to uphold equity, fairness, inclusiveness and balanced representation in recruitment, appointments, promotions and other personnel management processes.

Recognising the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, as a national institution serving Nigerians from diverse backgrounds, the Committee underscored the importance of ensuring that workforce composition continues to align with the provisions of the Constitution and the Federal Character Commission’s guidelines.

Addressing Identified Gaps

As the engagement progressed, attention turned to observations made during the compliance review. While discussing the Centre’s personnel structure, the Committee encouraged the Management to work closely with the Commission in addressing the staff distribution gaps identified during the exercise.

Members noted that stronger collaboration, regular consultation and adherence to established guidelines would support a more transparent personnel administration process while improving equitable representation across the institution.

Management Reaffirms Commitment

Responding on behalf of the Centre, the Chief Medical Director expressed appreciation to the Committee for the engagement and described the discussions as insightful and beneficial to the institution.

The Chief Medical Director noted that the interaction provided greater clarity on the Commission’s constitutional responsibilities and operational guidelines.
